Gallery - Surfaces

When these creations have taken all that the kiln can throw at them they take on a whole new incarnation. Their surfaces come to life. They have gradations of texture, depth, and colour where the flame slipped off them on its way along the kiln. Deposits from the wood stick to the pieces in varying degrees of melt, giving rough, smooth, matt, shiny surfaces, often in quite small areas.

The differential heat from upstream to downstream even alters the shapes of some pots, moves others to stick against each other, or make shadows on the pots' sides where the flame's flow was blocked.

Every area of the surface can be examined endlessly as they reveal more and more to the willing observer. This section of the website highlights these surfaces as the eye passes over their unique landscapes.
